Job Vacancy: Head of Donor Development & Engagement
Location: Anywhere in Canada, we have offices in Montreal, Toronto and Vancouver.
Reports to: Director of Fundraising & Supporter Engagement
Details: Full-time, permanent (Four day work week, Monday to Thursday, 28 hours/week)
Salary: $71,440 per year (this amount will be prorated for partial years of service)

That’s why Greenpeace Canada is looking for a new Head of Donor Development and Engagement.
As the Head of Donor Development and Engagement at Greenpeace Canada, you’ll lead legacy giving, develop and manage relationships with Greenpeace’s key supporters, and oversee our supporter care team and processes. In doing so, you’ll increase donor satisfaction and trust, build and strengthen our movement, and ensure Greenpeace is a powerful and effective voice for nature, peace and the planet.
The ideal candidate will be internally motivated, emotionally intelligent and results focused, with seven or more years’ experience in planned or mid-level giving including at least two years managing staff. We also expect candidates to possess a knowledge of environmental issues, and a commitment to Greenpeace’s values and campaign tactics. Fluency in English is a must – additional fluency in French would be a definite asset.
Major Responsibilities:
- Develop and implement an annual operating plan for the promotion of legacy giving and mid-level giving.
- Oversee estate administration, secure expert counsel when needed, and provide accurate reporting and forecasting.
- Identify major donor prospects within the mid-level donor program and develop a major donor pipeline.
- Develop strong relationships with donors and planned giving prospects through regular phone contact, tailored communications, events and face-to-face meetings.
- Identify prospective planned giving donors and solicit legacy gifts.
- Develop and implement strategies for maintaining strong relationships with new and existing legacy donors and expand the existing network of estate planning professional advisors.
- Develop and implement strategies to build a sense of community with donors and volunteers through virtual and in-person events.
- Manage the fundraising and planned giving administrator and two supporter care staff. Oversee hiring; provide orientation, training, direction and support; assign work responsibilities; evaluate employee performance; determine training requirements; and handle employee relations issues, as required.
- Develop, implement and maintain standard procedures and business rules for the administration of Greenpeace Canada’s fundraising operations including gift fulfillment and acknowledgements, supporter service level agreements, and supporter Q&As.
- Manage the relationship with Greenpeace Canada’s donation processing and fulfillment service provider. Develop and manage budgets for all associated services.
- Participate in and contribute to relevant communities of practice.
Required skills and experience
- Seven or more years in planned giving, major gift fundraising, or sales, including gift solicitation and stewardship
- Two or more years managing or supervising staff
- Exceptional communication and presentation skills (oral and written)
- Exceptional relationship building skills with donors and colleagues
- Experience working with vendors and allied professionals (e.g. lawyers, financial planners)
- Strong organization and time-management skills
- Project management experience, including the use of relevant software applications (e.g. Asana)
- Event planning experience
- Extensive experience working with Raiser’s Edge or similar fundraising CRMs
- Strong problem-solving skills and supporter/customer service orientation
- In-depth knowledge and experience of effective fundraising and loyalty-building strategies
- Strong experience in strategy development, implementation and evaluation, and budget management
- Ability to read/understand financial statements, do calculations, etc.
- Comfort and ease in interpreting legal concepts/language.
- Ability to translate complex concepts and structures into simple, plain English language both in writing and speech
- Strong emotional intelligence, including the ability to read people and situations astutely and respond accordingly, as well as high levels of self-awareness and compassion
- Experience working collaboratively with cross-functional teams
- Verbal and written English proficiency is required; French language proficiency is a strong asset.
- Knowledge of First Nations, Inuit and Métis languages are highly desirable.
- Knowledge of other languages that reflect the diversity of Canada’s many communities are also highly desirable.
- General knowledge of environmental and social justice issues and knowledge of the overall goals and intent of Greenpeace
You will work with colleagues across Canada and collaborate with other Greenpeace offices around the world.
Candidates should understand and support the Greenpeace campaign tactics, including the use of peaceful civil disobedience.
