This is one of those fun stories I like to occasionally highlight. If you pay any attention to the trade press and/or environmental issues, you’re aware of the pending surge in electricity demand that will be driven by the proliferation of AI-based data centers. It’s a real problem. Particularly given how radically it changes the ground rules for the utility industry.
Some companies planning to build out data centers like Microsoft and Amazon are looking to also acquiring their own sources of power. Others are considering nuclear. No doubt that will solve part of the problem, but I’ve yet to see any indication that anyone has a plan that would offer a broader solution.
That’s one reason why this story caught my eye. That, and I firmly believe we should be encouraging these “outlandish” type ideas because that’s precisely what will be required to effectively address climate change.
I have said it many times before, and will continue to beat the drum, but if anyone thinks we can solve climate change by building as much solar and wind as possible, as fast as we can, they’re deluding themselves.
So bravo to close who refuse to be confined by conventionalism in their approach to climate change.
