In a move poised to revolutionize local agriculture and food security, Global Mana Development has signed an agreement to develop a 77-acre Agrivillage in Papaikou, located on Hawaii’s Big Island. This project, spearheaded by fifth-generation farmer Steven Shropshire and the visionary team at Global Mana Development, aims to address the pressing issue of food supply shortages in Hawaii.

Papaikou is a quaint census-designated place (CDP) located in Hawaii County, Hawaii, on the east side of the Big Island. A few miles north of Hilo, it spans 1.9 square miles, with 23.03% of that being water. It borders the Pacific Ocean from Hokeo Point in the north to Kekiwi Point in the south.

Key attractions include Akaka Falls State Park, the Lyman Museum, and Mission House. Papaikou is also part of the scenic Hamakua Heritage Corridor Drive from Hilo to Waipio Valley, making it an ideal spot for nature lovers and culture seekers.

Historically, Papaikou was established in the late 1800s as a thriving sugar plantation community, reflecting Hawaii’s rich agricultural past. Today, it is a gateway to the enchanting Onomea Bay and its natural wonders.

Hawaii’s geographical isolation makes it particularly vulnerable to disruptions in food supply, a reality underscored by the COVID-19 pandemic. Recognizing this critical issue, Steven Shropshire, a longtime resident and landowner on the Big Island, conceived the idea of a self-sustaining micro-farming community. His vision led to founding a dedicated partner in Global Mana Development, a group renowned for its commitment to sustainability and innovative solutions.

The Papaikou Agrivillage project includes detailed architectural plans valued at over $200,000. It encompasses micro-farming, community-planned self-sustaining farms, integrated water and waste management systems, and a localized energy supply.
