Indonesia has made substantial progress in its commitment to reducing greenhouse gas emissions, achieving a 34.4% reduction equivalent to 123.2 million tons by 2023. This milestone was announced by Eniya Listiani Dewi, Director General of New, Renewable Energy, and Energy Conservation (EBTKE), during the “Indonesia’s Climate Change Mitigation Efforts in the Energy Sector” conference at the Asia Pacific Broadcasting Union (ABU) Summit 2024 in Bali.
Highlighting Indonesia’s efforts, Eniya stated, “We must continue to strive to reduce emissions further by developing renewable energy, improving energy efficiency, and optimizing the use of low-carbon fuels. Additionally, we need to reduce coal usage, innovate with clean coal technologies, and ensure effective mining reclamation.”
To bolster these efforts, Government Regulation No. 33/2023 on Energy Conservation has been implemented, mandating energy management across various sectors, including energy service providers, industry, transportation, and buildings. This regulation is expected to yield significant energy savings and reduce emissions further.
The anticipated energy savings include:
- Energy Service Providers: 9.4 trillion rupiah and 3.56 million TOE
- Industry: 20.8 trillion rupiah and 5.28 million TOE
- Transportation Sector: 4.2 trillion rupiah and 0.4 million TOE
- Buildings and Structures: 0.9 trillion rupiah and 66 million TOE
Eniya also highlighted the success of the Minimum Energy Performance Standard (SKEM) and the Energy Saving Label (LTHE). To date, SKEM and LTHE have been issued for seven devices: air conditioners, refrigerators, rice cookers, fans, LED lights, refrigerated display cases, and televisions. These measures are expected to significantly reduce electricity load and save energy in the coming years.
“For energy efficiency, last year we introduced SKEMs and labeling for various appliances. This must be realized in our lifestyle, and I encourage everyone to buy electronic products with the SKEM and five-star LTHE marks,” Eniya emphasized.
The SKEM for daily-use equipment like air conditioners and LED lights is projected to reduce the electricity load by 599 MW and save 3.0 TWh of energy by 2025, and further reduce the load by 787 MW and save 3.8 TWh by 2030.
Eniya concluded by stressing the importance of cooperation and stakeholder participation, particularly in human resource development, to achieve a just energy transition and effective climate change mitigation. “Strengthening and expanding innovation technologies for energy efficiency and renewable energy integration is one of our top priorities. By optimizing our strengths, we can make significant strides towards a sustainable and inclusive energy future.”
