First, a bit of context. Jabil is an electronics manufacturing service provider (EMS). It, for example, builds charging stations for electric vehicles. But not as a brand—it builds things for other brands. In this case, it is part of a partnership with the German infrastructure startup EcoG, which is about to launch a new EV charging infrastructure concept onto the market in Europe and the US. More on that in a moment.
Jabli Business Unit Director Friedel Meyer says that his company has more than 100 factories in 30 countries. In terms of EV infrastructure, the focus is on DC charging infrastructure. For example, Jabil produces a NEVI-compliant DC charger for the company Power Electronics in the US.
In addition to DC chargers, Jabil also manufactures AC chargers for “large companies.” And it also helps new companies with their products. “We help them, especially on the power and module side, and also on the, what we call, high level-assembly, so with the entire charger manufacturing,” Meyer explains. “In the factory, we have a power electronics design team that can help our customers or that helps our current customers to further advance their designs, to do value engineering on their design, and then manufacture it at the most competitive price.”
If the design is the right and there is a market for the product, Jabil is ready to ramp up production “tomorrow,” Meyer emphasises.
As mentioned above, Jabil is one of EcoG’s partners for launching the so-called ‘Powerblock/Dispenser Architecture’ on the market. The concept involves connecting several charging stations to one central power block. Since it eliminates otherwise necessary groundwork for every stand-alone charger, it makes it easier to scale infrastructure and is also said to reduce the total cost. Another partner is Rittal, to whom we also spoke.
