Xpeng today began rolling out its all-road-ready XNGP feature to all users in China, bringing the biggest update to its smart driving capabilities.
Xpeng (NYSE: XPEV) has begun pushing its latest AI-powered Tianji XOS 5.2.0 to users in China, bringing what it calls the biggest update ever to its XNGP (Xpeng navigation guided pilot) assisted driving feature after months of beta testing.
The Chinese electric vehicle (EV) maker announced at a launch event today that the latest version of the XNGP feature is now available to all eligible vehicles, and that the feature can be used on all public roads in China.
XNGP is Xpeng’s Advanced Driver Assistance System (ADAS), similar to Tesla‘s (NASDAQ: TSLA) FSD (Full Self-Driving).
Initially available only on highways, then known as Highway NGP, Xpeng gradually expanded its coverage to urban areas, known as City NGP. Xpeng now refers to its ADAS capabilities collectively as XNGP.
XNGP actually became available on all roads in China at the beginning of this year, but Xpeng spent more than half a year conducting large-scale real-world tests to ensure driving safety, said He Xiaopeng, chairman and CEO of the EV maker.
To date, the XNGP has accumulated more than 7.56 million kilometers of testing, Mr. He said at today’s event.
Mr. He said XNGP uses end-to-end AI large model technology and is one of the only two car makers in the world to have used the technology in intelligent driving systems.
He didn’t mention another automaker that uses end-to-end technology in smart driving systems, but apparently it’s Tesla (NASDAQ: TSLA). Mr. He experienced Tesla’s FSD in the US last month and spoke highly of the software.
Xpeng’s latest XNGP feature can be used on any public road in China, as long as navigation is covered, according to the company.
In the latest public beta of XNGP, the AI chauffeur feature has been able to allow vehicles to pass through toll booths automatically.
Xpeng expects that by the fourth quarter, XNGP will also be able to handle parking lot gates and internal campus roads for a true “door-to-door” experience, Mr. He said.
By the end of 2025 and the beginning of 2026, the number of security takeovers and efficiency takeovers for XNGP will be significantly reduced, allowing users to truly enjoy using the feature, the company said.
With the help of end-to-end technology, Xpeng’s OTA updates had seen one version iteration every two days and one experience upgrade every 2 weeks.
Since its debut on May 20, Tianji OS has accumulated five updates in 70 days, enabling at least 35 version iterations, outpacing the mobile industry, according to Mr. He.
Tianji covers the XNGP as well as the smart cockpit system, and Xpeng brings 484 feature upgrades in the latest Tianji XOS 5.2.0, including better interaction with phones.
Tianji XOS 5.2.0 is being pushed to the Max version of Xpeng models starting immediately, and overseas users will start getting the update on August 15, according to the company.
